Safe, modestly sized and affordable housing is getting harder to come by in London. Increasing pressure on local authority provision and exponentially increasing house prices mean that many people are having to choose between living in inadequate housing conditions or leaving their friends, family and communities for good.
London CLT provides genuinely and permanently affordable homes, offering one way to address the growing gap in the housing market between people who qualify for social housing and those who can afford to buy a home on the open market. Furthermore, we do so in a way that does not require government subsidy or a reduced profit margin for developers.
We are the first Community Land Trust (CLT) in the capital to sell homes, starting with our flagship project at St Clements in Mile End.
London CLT was born out of the community organising efforts of Citizens UK – the national home of community organising – in response to the need for genuinely affordable homes in the capital. We remain rooted in the principles of community organising, and is an ongoing part of London Citizens’ work. However, London CLT is an independent organisation that is governed by its own members. Anyone who lives in London can buy a share for £1 and become a member. This gives them a vote at the AGM each year and proves their commitment to the cause. Each year, any member can stand as a member of the Board at the AGM. The Board is then duly elected by its members on a one member one vote basis.
